Although the gender gap in the workforce is nothing new, research is now suggesting that women may go into their professional careers with lower expectations than their male counterparts.According to research out of the University of Guelph, women have an overall lower career expectation than men. Ultimately, women believe they will receive lower paychecks and have to wait a longer time for a promotion. The researchers found that women predict their starting salaries to be 14 percent less than their male counterparts, and also wait two months longer before they decide to try and work their way up in the company. However, the study's authors are suggesting that this is a direct result of women constantly hearing about the gender gaps in the workforce, which is what they have come to expect when they enter the working world."Women know that they currently aren't earning as much as men so they enter the workforce with that expectation," said researcher Ed Ng. "Because they don't expect to earn as much, they likely aren't as aggressive when it comes to negotiating salaries or pay raises and will accept lower-paying jobs than men, which perpetuates the existing inequalities."
