An individual who is narcissistic may be vain, selfish or have an ego. Although these are typically considered to be negative personality traits, there are those who feel these characteristics help make good leaders.Researchers from the University of Amsterdam put this theory to the test in a recent study. Barbara Nevicka, a PhD candidate in organizational psychology, said that in certain circumstances, such as a time of crisis, some people feel that narcissistic leaders can take control of a situation and do the right thing. However, the study's findings reveal that narcissism is not as useful a trait for leaders to possess as some people believe it to be. Over the course of the study, 150 participants were split into three groups, with one individual leading each team. Each group was tasked with selecting a job candidate. While everybody was allowed to provide advice, the leader ultimately made the final decision. In the end, the researchers found that groups that were led by the biggest egotists also chose the worst candidates."They inhibited the communication because of self-centeredness and authoritarianism," Nevicka said. Before an individual enters a specific career, they may want to consider taking an employment personality test. The results of this assessment can help people decide if a certain profession is worth pursuing, based on their characteristics.
