In October, the national unemployment rate was at 9.0 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Despite the fact that many Americans are out of work, Cincinnati.com reported that a number of employers are in desperate need of trained workers who can fill important roles.
According to the news source, 97,000 individuals throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky are unemployed. Part of the problem is that many of the available jobs require workers to receive training in order to be considered. Janet Harrah, an economist at Northern Kentucky University, said that the skills mismatch is occurring across the country. In addition, many people either cannot or do not want to relocate for new employment opportunities.
"One of the great strengths of the American labor force has always been its mobility," Harrah told the news outlet. "But they can't move if they can't sell their house."
Among the positions that need to be filled, but also require training, are pharmacy technicians, physical or occupational therapists and assistants, utility and communication line workers, welders, and aircraft maintenance technicians, according to the news source.
Before individuals start training for these jobs, they may want to take a career test to ensure that they are a good fit for the roles they wish to pursue.
